The marathons are back

The electronic message board was supposed to reduce County Commission meetings to a duration something less than a Strom Thurmond filibuster. Don't you believe it.

Helped along by a 3+ hour revolving door debate over the proposed mediation settlement with National Resources Recovery, the circus ran 11 hours on Monday. The issue could have been - and should have been - voted up or down in 15 minutes. Just shoot me.

I saw the last hour of this meeting - the discussion of what to do about Davis/Daniels' proposed changes to how the Charter Review Committee process works.

Commissioners were obviously tired and punch drunk, but watching them be confused, belligerent, and silly trying to discuss an important issue at midnight after they'd been there for 10 hours was anything but funny.

These guys need to learn how to conduct appropriate debate and discussion. But I think most of them are a lost cause.

This is where an effective chairperson could move things along. Strickland seems passive and lethargic (could be valid health reasons), but he doesn't restate the motions (causing much confusion), is selective about who he permits to ramble on, and, really, fails the leadership test when these meetings last so long.
