I just don't remember
Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 11:17PM I love BBC news. A story titled "Anaesthetic drug 'numbs memory'" gives us all hope. It seems that low doses of a commonly used anaesthetic drug can inhibit the retention of painful memories.

Imagine the possibilities! Say, for example, you're a politician -- hey, maybe even the president, why not? -- and you're about to make a decision you know will be controversial like, hmm, deciding to invade a sovereign nation that poses no direct threat to the U.S. Take a dose of memory eraser just before you pull the trigger and -- presto! When you're asked at your impeachment trial why you made such a reckless decision, you can respond, "I don't remember," with a clear conscience.
Or, you could be a candidate for office -- hey, maybe even for president, why not? -- and you once landed in a war zone where (darn it!) no war was happening at the time, although your account made it sound as if only your Kevlar vest stood between you and eternity. If you had simply imbibed a bit of memory eraser before you landed, you could have shut up those skeptics with a heartfelt: "I don't remember."
Guys, what about bachelor parties? Take your medicine before the party, and when your bride-to-be quizzes you the next day about what went on, you'll know what to say: "I don't remember."
I envision a new day for humanity if this marvelous discovery gets into the hands of consumers in a big way. With judiciously timed usage of this miracle drug, you can lead a life of no regrets, emerging at the end to tell your Maker: "I did all that? Honestly, Lord, I just don't remember."
