Fasten your seatbelts...

It's going to be bumpy ride.

I'm referring to fiscal year 2009, just around the corner. Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale has ridden the "no property tax increase" horse about as far as its feeble legs will carry him. The Day of Reckoning is at hand, and if you think you've seen wild antics on County Commission before, just wait until the administration tries to justify a tax increase and/or massive budget cuts on top of the spending shenanigans that have gone in the executive office since 2002.

The Mayor's skill as a marketer (primarily of himself) will be of little use in the looming budget battle. His effort to be all things to all peoples while neglecting the duties for which he was elected now exacts a price, and the Mayor no longer possesses the moral capital to pay what is due.

Who will any longer take this Mayor at his word? The upcoming budget is likely to be the most critically examined in the history of Knox County, and some very hard questions must be answered. Once the disastrous consequences of his mismanagement are understood, utmost will be this one:

While you were busy running for governor since 2002, who's been minding the store?

Saw you created a bit of a fuss by listing the Ethics Committee address.

Nice work.

Word is the next fix is to keep the final audit of the Hospitality Fund out of Commission's hands until after September.

But what if the final audit and responses were available in August? Let's encourage Mr. Walls to get to work. I look forward to the show.
