It's St. Patrick's Day, Danny Boy
Monday, March 17, 2008 at 03:26PM Are you wearing your green? With a Dutch father and and a "Scotch-Irish" mother, I'm in a sartorial quandary. Maybe a colorful tartan is the way to go.
And speaking of "Danny Boy," how about all the hoopla surrounding this sad not-even-genuine-Irish ballad? My earliest memory of the song is a version recorded by the country singer Ray Price in the late 60's. Since then I've listened to a couple of Irish tenors wring the tears out of the lyrics, one who recorded in the 1920's if memory serves.
I can't blame the Irish for disavowing the song. There certainly is pathetically little to "celebrate" in the tune, although I understand the affect it could have after inhaling a few pints on St. Paddy's Day.
If there's a Dutch equivalent to "Danny Boy" I'm not aware of it, but I doubt one exists. To my ear at least, "Oh, Gottfried Jongen" just doesn't have the same panache.
