Farragut Town Hall

I know that it's considered heresy by folks on the north side of Knox County to brag on anything the "Farragutians" do, but the fact is the Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen know how to conduct a meeting. Twice a month, the second and fourth Thursdays, the FBMA conducts business at the Farragut Town Hall, and while they may not be as entertaining as the Knox County Commission, they get things done.

The Aldermen are a set of accomplished folks in their own right, bright, articulate and always well-prepared. But credit must go to Mayor Eddy Ford for keeping discussions on track, for moving the agenda along and for brooking no nonsense. There are exceptions, but most meetings conclude in about two hours, including reports from the town's administrator, other department heads and public forum.

Attending at least one FBMA meeting should be required of every Knox County Commissioner, newly-minted or old hand. Each  might come away with ideas on how to hold meetings lasting less than eight hours.

Until that happens, and I don't look for improvement anytime soon, I'll continue to brown bag my lunch and supper for the monthly commission marathons. And if you catch me nodding off on press row, just give me a gentle nudge in the ribs. Sigh.
