South-Doyle charter amendment forum
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 11:49AM About a hundred Knox County residents attended a charter amendment forum at South-Doyle High School last night. Commissioner Victoria DeFreese organized the event.
Farragut resident Mike Mitchell spoke on behalf of citizens who believe more public input is needed before the proposed charter amendments are placed on the ballot. Seven of the nine proposed amendments passed on first reading at commission.
Kathy Hamilton, former school board chair Jim McClain and Halls resident Brad Hill represented the Knox Charter Petition (KCP) group.
Using the SWAG method, I estimate that the crowd split about 60-40, wih the majority on Mitchell's side. The 40% or so minority favored placing all nine amendments on the ballot as currently written for voters to consider.
Commissioner Paul Pinkston earned applause when he remarked that he was generally "against all of" the amendments. However, some in the audience were moved to applaud for the KCP speakers as well.
A major sticking point for those opposed to some or all of the amendments has been KCP's apparent refusal to compromise on the language of the amendments. Nothing said by the group's representatives last night appeared to alter that position.
